On 1 January 2013, the HPRA became the competent authority responsible for the implementation of Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes in accordance with the requirements of the S.I No 543 of 2012. The authority was transferred from the Department of Health which regulated this area until 31 December 2012.

The purpose of this report is to present statistical data on the number of animals used for scientific purposes in Ireland during the year 2013 in accordance with Article 54(2) of the Directive. This is the first report to be prepared by the HPRA since it became the competent authority responsible for the regulation of this area. The Department of Health published all previous statistical reports.
