Problem Or Issue:

Glaxo Smithkline (GSK) is currently rationing supplies of Zovirax 30mg/g Eye Ointment, PA1077/84/2. There is currently a shortage of the product, as a result of a potential contamination issue, affecting multiple batches worldwide. Please note that, although recalls have occurred on other markets, the Irish batches of Zovirax 30mg/g Eye Ointment are not affected by this defect issue.


A letter regarding the product shortage will be sent by GSK to prescribers and pharmacists this week, with further information. Please see an electronic version of the letter below.

GSK is asking prescribers to consider if an alternative treatment for the treatment of Herpes simplex keratitis. GSK has indicated that oral valaciclovir is also indicated for the treatment of Herpes simplex keratitis in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. In addition, it may be possible to source topical aciclovir and ganciclovir products, on an unlicensed / exempt basis.
