Date: 24/10/2017

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) noted a ruling made at Dublin District Court on Monday 23rd October 2017 against Lynn Fitzmaurice. The charges against Ms Fitzmaurice included five counts of introducing, into the State, falsified medicines containing anabolic steroid substances; the value of the medicines detained is €27,000 (approx.). Ms Fitzmaurice pleaded guilty to all five counts and was fined a total of €7,000.

According to John Lynch, Director of Compliance, HPRA, “We continue to warn the public not to buy medicines from unregulated sources. In the case of anabolic steroid containing products, they pose a potentially serious health risk. As they are illegal and may be falsified, there can be no guarantee as to their safety or quality. These potent prescription medicines should only be prescribed by and administered under the supervision of registered medical practitioners and supplied by registered pharmacies.”

The HPRA, in conjunction with An Garda Síochána and the Revenue’s Customs Service, continually monitors and investigates instances of illegal supply of medicines and actively enforces against suspected breaches of the law.
