European campaign promoting responsible use of over-the-counter medicines
15/09/2025 Public health updateRead the leaflet, follow the instructions, and use over-the-counter medicines wisely. That is the joint message from European medicines authorities involved in a new online awareness campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness among European citizens about the importance of proper use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.
The campaign aims to reach anyone who occasionally uses OTC medicines such as painkillers, nasal sprays, or cough syrup, and will be available on our social media accounts.
What are over-the-counter medicines?
Over-the-counter medicines can be purchased without a prescription from a pharmacy, shop, or supermarket. These medicines are intended for mild health complaints such as pain, fever, or a cold. However, no medicine is without risk. Incorrect use can lead to unpleasant side effects or even addiction.
That is why it is important – just as with any medicine – to read the patient information leaflet carefully and follow the instructions. The patient information leaflet contains important information about a medicine, such as what it is used for, how to take it, and the recommended dose. It also contains information about storing it correctly. Reading the leaflet can help someone take their medicine safely and help protect their health.
European cooperation
Since the use of OTC medicines crosses borders, European countries have joined forces in this campaign. It underscores the essential steps for safer use of these medicines: reading the leaflet, adhering to the recommended maximum duration of use, and consulting a doctor if symptoms persist.
Using the theme “Medicines are not sweets”, this is the first joint campaign launched by the Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA).
Lorraine Nolan, Chief Executive of the HPRA, welcomed the campaign:
“The HPRA is pleased to support the first-ever pan-European campaign focused on the safe use of over-the-counter medicines. This important public health initiative aims to raise awareness about using medicines safely and effectively. To get the best results from your medicine, we encourage everyone to read the information on the packaging and in the patient information leaflet carefully. If you’re unsure about anything or have concerns, always speak to a healthcare professional.”
