HPRA statement on use of paracetamol medicines during pregnancy

23/09/2025 Press release Public health update

The HPRA states that paracetamol is an important treatment option for the management of fever and pain in pregnancy and available evidence does not link its use to causing autism in children.

Product information for paracetamol in Ireland and across the European Union recommends that paracetamol can be used during pregnancy. As with any medicine, it should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.

This recommendation is based upon rigorous review of a large amount of data from pregnant women who have used paracetamol.

Pregnant women are advised to follow instructions and guidance when taking paracetamol and to always read the medicine package leaflet. Anyone with any further questions should consult their doctor or pharmacist.

The HSE also advises that paracetamol is safe to take in pregnancy.

The EMA, together with the HPRA and national authorities in the European Union, continuously monitor the safety of all medicines, including those containing paracetamol, and will promptly evaluate any new evidence that emerges.
