Role Summary

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) is the national competent authority for Directive 2010/63/EU which relates to the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. The Scientific Officer will work as part of the Scientific Animal Protection (SAP) section within the Veterinary Sciences department for the purposes of implementing the requirements of this Directive.

Working under the direction of the SAP Manager, the Scientific Officer will work as part of a team dealing with the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. The primary role of the Scientific Officer will be the evaluation of applications for authorisation to conduct research using animals. They will also play a role in supporting the overall work of the department.

The Scientific Officer will work closely with the other members of the SAP team, and with members of the Veterinary Sciences department as a whole, to ensure that the departmental objectives are achieved.

The Scientific Officer will maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders to ensure that SAP issues are effectively communicated and managed.

  • Support HPRA management in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of animals used for scientific purposes

Operational Objectives

  • Perform the tasks required in an efficient manner

  • Assist in the upkeep of Quality Management System procedures

  • Provide support to other colleagues within the Veterinary Sciences department, where required

  • Management of authorisation databases

  • Compilation of statistical reports on animal usage and verification of numerical returns

  • Maintaining appropriate records of meetings and activities, where required

  • Compilation of data relating to the annual maintenance fees for SAP
