Italy lifts safety measures for human tissues, cells and organs, following the end of the Chikungunya outbreak

Problem Or Issue:
On the 3rd of December, the Italian health authorities suspended officially the nationwide specific safety measures for human tissues, cells and organs, following the confirmation of the end of the Chikungunya outbreak in the region Emilia-Romagna. 

This followed a communication to all Competent Authorities in September advising that an outbreak of Chikungunya virus was affecting the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. 

The Italian health authorities adopted nationwide specific safety measures for Human tissues, cells and organs, to secure the donation and distribution chains from any contamination by the virus. 

The Italian authorities provided the Commission with detailed information on these national safety measures, to be shared with the European Competent Authorities for Human Tissues and Cells.
